For last week’s Hump Day I brought you Hipster Shaadi, the dating site for Muslims who feel left out of both the traditional religious matchmaking process and the standard dating that most native-born Americans and Europeans participate in. This week I’ve decided to stick with the religious outsiders theme with Christian Swingers, a website for – you guessed it – Christians who are into “the lifestyle.”
ChristianSwingers.com is a website that claims to provide a judgment-free space for swinging couples who believe that Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior to meet up with other Christians like them. Like any other swinger site, Christian Swingers is a hookup site for couples who are looking to get down with other couples.
At first glance, you’re probably thinking what? How can Christians be swingers? Isn’t the whole “one man, one woman” thing kind of a major part of what they’re about?
While I’m not very well versed in the Bible and therefore can’t tell you whether or not it’s biblically “possible” for a Christian to be a swinger, I can tell you that a Gallup poll from a year ago found that 77% of Americans self-report as Christians. If Christianity is our majority religion and a religion that’s already fractured into hundreds of different groups with their own interpretations of the Bible, doesn’t it stand to reason that some of those Christians would also be swingers?
Seems logical to me but, like I said, I’m no religious scholar. That’s just one woman’s outside opinion.
Providing the kind of privacy you just can’t get in a swingers club.
The number one appeal in the Christian Swingers website (because it’s definitely not the copy… Or the design…) is the fact that it provides a measure of anonymity for people who absolutely desire it most. The site promises to provide Christian swingers with a place to meet other couples to hook up with, without having to take the risk of revealing their true identities from the get go.
Here’s the major flaw in that logic: If you spot someone at a swingers club, yes, they know that you’re a swinger. However, the chances of them being at a swingers club but not being a swinger themselves is very, very slim. So slim, in fact, that I’d say it’s pretty much nonexistent.
So what have we learned?
The idea of a Christian swingers website is great because it points to the simple truth that sexuality is so often not controlled even by the groups that want to control it most. Believing in God and Jesus Christ doesn’t have to mean you buy into any particular way to have sex, the same way it doesn’t mean you necessarily buy into any particular way to worship.
The only thing I think we should be hating on here is…
The copy. Please, please make it stop! I have some advice for you, Christian Swingers founders: Please, please, please hire a professional writer (or, you know, someone who graduated high school) to clean up your copy. You’ve already caught a lot of flack for the content of your site so don’t give the haters more ammunition by presenting them with something that looks like it was written by an eighth grader.
