British swingers have an average age of 45, almost 10 years older than their continental counterparts.

New research found the average age for first time swingers across Europe is 35, but it is between 40 and 50 in Britain.

Perhaps surprisingly the youngest swingers are in Belgium and Spain, according to a poll of 3,000 people.

The report claimed that in the UK there are more than 500,000 married swingers, compared to 1.9 million in Germany.

Research commissioned by adult holiday resort Spice Lanzarote found that 95 per cent of swingers were in long term relationships and just five per cent were single.

Nine in 10 claimed swinging had not damaged their relationship with a long term partner and a similar number even said the practice had strengthened the relationship.

But most swingers keep their sexual habit a secret - six in 10 do not admit to swinging and only four per cent would tell another family member.

Sixty per cent of women swingers say they are bisexual, compared to just 17 per cent of male swingers.

One in two swingers said they still have unfulfilled sexual fantasies.

Kylie Minogue was the only celebrity cited as part of a swingers unfulfilled fantasy.

Julian Woolley, marketing manager for Spice Lanzarote, said: "The object of our survey is to demystify a massive sector of Europe.

To the uninitiated it seems hidden and underground, a dark, secret and sordid twilight world. However the reality is somewhat different. In Europe it is more representative of the mindset that ushered in the sexual revolutions of the 20s and 60s.

The reality is that an honest relationship today is one where couples can discuss their sexual fantasies with their partner. From then the boundary is a blurred one, between the ones that experiment further and those that dont.

This survey provides some insight into the millions of people that do, possibly your neighbours, colleagues, local business owners, teachers, civil servants, lawyers, waiters, close friends and the person standing next to you right now.
